New Report Highlights the Need for CMS Security Upgrades

The National Research Council has released a report on the IT security measures of CMS. It states
that the centres should upgrade their current technology to properly protect their electronic health
records.

A recent report by a National Research Council committee has stated that the Centers for Medicare
and Medicaid Services (CMS) require an information security upgrade as the current platform
is inadequate for its needs. The report says that CMS needs to appeal to the public’s trust by
implementing secure IT services, which must also fulfill the goals of transparency and openness.
One of the recommendations was that CMS improves the skills of its employees in areas such as
technology management, evaluation and security. A proper strategy must be created as well, the
report states, in which the proper budgets are allocated and the technology is seamlessly integrated
together.
