HHS Proposes Timeline Changes for Medicare EHR Incentive Program
A new statement by the secretary of the HHS has revealed new changes to be made in
their meaningful use program. These alterations are designed to boost participation and make it
easier for healthcare providers to satisfy EHR requirements.
HHS secretary, Kathleen Sebelius has announced that the department will make several important
policy changes to its Medicare EHR Incentive Program, which allows healthcare providers to qualify
for additional Medicare and Medicaid payments if they successfully show meaningful use of certified
electronic health records.
Currently, those who meet Stage 1 of the program in 2012 would need to reach Stage 2 by 2014.
To encourage greater participation, the HHS has extended this latter deadline to those who reach
Stage 1 by the end of 2011. The department will soon commence an outreach program to inform
healthcare providers and vendors about these new changes.
At the same time as announcing these policy adjustments, Sebelius also said that the past year had
seen great improvements in the use of EHRs as well as participation in the meaningful use program.
